Councillors defer Auckland stadiums decision

6:37 pm on 27 September 2012

Auckland councillors have put off deciding how to go about a major reorganisation of stadiums and top level sports in the region.

The council's Regional Facilities Agency had sought the green light to continue talks that could result in top level rugby league, cricket and speedway moving to new venues.

The agency favours a possible shift of the Warriors rugby league games to Eden Park, and speedway relocating to Mount Smart Stadium.

On Thursday councillors failed to agree on a direction for the agency to follow and will consider the issue in more detail in a session behind closed doors.

They did decide there should be consultation with the community.

A longer term issue is the future ownership of Eden Park, which the Government spent $200 million on upgrading for last year's Rugby World Cup.
