6:10 am on 20 December 2008

Police have identified a woman found in the Avon River in Christchurch on Friday morning and say she did not die of natural causes.

The name of the woman, 27, has not been released, but police say she is not missing Christchurch woman Tisha Lowry.

The woman's partially clothed body was found early in the morning by a kayaker.

Detective Inspector Greg Williams says the woman suffered severe injuries but it has not been established exactly how she died.

Mr Williams says it is not yet known when her body ended up in the river, but he wants to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious on Thursday night.

The body was found in the Dallington Terrace area of the Avon River.
