Flotilla protests fishfarm expansion in Sounds

8:14 pm on 29 September 2012

A flotilla of more than 40 boats took their protest against expanding salmon farms to the waters of Ruakaka Bay in the Marlborough Sounds on Saturday.

The Guardians of the Sounds say local residents want the government to understand their strong opposition to the area being turned into an industrialised zone.

King Salmon is proposing the development of eight new sites in the Sounds.

Guardians' chairperson Pete Beech says locals feel they have been left out of consultations over the proposal, and they want to have a say.

He says more than 1000 submissions will be presented at the local marae in Waikawa next week.
