Mangawhai rates rebels urge rest of Kaipara to join

The leaders of a rates rebellion in Kaipara say the entire district is now being asked to pay for Mangawhai's bungled sewerage scheme.

Cost blow-outs for the scheme have left the small Kaipara District Council with debts of more than $50 million.

The Government has replaced the council with commissioners.

Mangawhai ratepayers chair Bruce Rogan says the council struck new rates before it was sacked, reducing the proposed Mangawhai rates rise to about 15% but increasing rates in the rest of the district by up to 50%.

He says the council's borrowings and rating for the Mangawhai sewerage scheme were illegal - and all Kaipara ratepayers should withhold their rates until the commissioners address that problem.
