University drops English-language programme

3:30 pm on 1 October 2012

Canterbury University has dropped its English-language programme because of a decline in the number of students.

The course, which helped foreign students gain proficiency in English before they went on to take other courses, was down to 30 students this year compared with 150 in 2010, before the Canterbury earthquakes.

Seven staff will be made redundant.

The university is reducing its staff by 150 over the next three years because of falling enrolment.
