More wards in Grey Hospital deemed quake-prone

Canterbury District Health Board is considering its options after more parts of Grey Base Hospital were found to be earthquake-prone.

The hospital in Greymouth, which serves the entire West Coast, was already undergoing temporary strengthening work on two earthquake-prone wards.

The board has now received preliminary reports which show the hospital's acute and emergency wards and its mental health building are also vulnerable.

The hospital has asked for funding to carry out temporary work to make those wards safe in the short term while it decides what the best approach will be in the long term.
