Railway line closed by freezing works fire

6:03 am on 22 December 2008

Rail commuters in Auckland can expect delays on Monday morning as the line at Penrose remains closed following a massive fire.

The blaze at the Southdown freezing works in Penrose began at about 6pm on Saturday and kept crew busy most of the weekend.

The railway line runs alongside the derelict plant. It is closed due to debris on the track.

Veolia Transport says all trains on the southern line will divert to the eastern line and onto Britomart.

A shuttle service will run between Penrose and Britomart and buses will run between Otahuhu and Penrose.

A decision about re-opening the line will be made later in the day.
