Whangarei teacher to fight dismissal

A teacher sacked by a Catholic school in Whangarei over a gay rights row says he intends to fight his dismissal.

Pompallier College dismissed science teacher Nigel Studdart after he helped pupils protesting against comments by the school's principal about gay parents.

Mr Studdart believes he was unfairly dismissed and wants his job back.

He says the sacking followed a difference of opinion between himself and the principal, and the school had used an archaic method to retain power and control.

Mr Studdart said it was also unfair to his students, who were just weeks away from exams.

He says parents are now paying him to tutor their children, three times per week.
