Alarm at number of high-speed logging trucks

Police in Gisborne are astounded at the number of logging trucks speeding on State Highway 35 along the East Coast, which they say is alarmingly high.

Of the 100 trucks caught driving too fast over a two-day operation targeting State Highway 35, 98 were logging trucks.

Senior Sergeant Phil Critchley says one was caught five times over the two days. Others were caught speeding multiple times.

He says speeding in a 44-tonne truck is extremely dangerous, for both the driver and anyone else on the road.
