CD recommendation rejected

7:09 am on 6 October 2012

The Ministry of Civil Defence has rejected one of the major recommendations in a report on the response to the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch.

The review is mostly favourable, but noted a dysfunctional relationship between Christchurch City Council and the area Civil Defence emergency group.

The review recommends that councils no longer have the power to control responses to an earthquake.

But Civil Defence Minister Chris Tremain says this won't be adopted, as emergencies are best dealt with locally.
