New Zealand owners or users of Simpson washing machines affected by an international recall have been assured they can continue to use them safely.

A spokesperson for electronics company Electrolux, Craig McCarthy, says about 1500 machines in New Zealand are affected by the recall of faulty top-loading machines.

If the programme selector knob is removed, the power is left on and the screws are touching an electric shock is possible.

However, Mr McCarthy says there is no danger to anyone using the machine normally and the fault would only be encountered by a technician servicing it.

Machine owners are advised to call 0800 277 542 for a technician to fix the fault, free of charge.
