City Mission expecting crowds for lunch

9:13 am on 25 December 2008

The Auckland City Mission says a record number of people could turn up to its annual Christmas lunch as those in need struggle more than ever.

Streams of people have been queueing outside the Mission this week seeking support in unprecedented numbers.

The organisation has surpassed the number of food parcels it gave out before Christmas last year while donations are down.

Auckland City Mission head, Diane Robertson, said the the drop in donations reflects the recession.

She said food being prepared this morning includes almost a thousand kilograms of ham, chicken, potatoes and kumara, and 1200 meringues.
