Agency data indicates that in some places between Boxing Day and 5 January, traffic volume could be up to three times that of an average day.

Data over the past decade show that on Boxing Day, the number of fatal and serious injury crashes has reached as high as 12, up from an average day of 7.3.

The National Road Policing Manager Superintendent, Paula Rose, says the country is entering the most dangerous time of the year on the roads.
