Hot-spots still flaring at fire site

12:31 pm on 27 December 2008

Another hot-spot has flared at the scene of last weekend's massive fire in Auckland.

Fire crew have been working to put out the hot-spot at the old Southdown freezing works in Penrose, after calling in another fire engine on Saturday morning. A smaller crew had to tackle a fresh hot-spot on Friday.

Fire Service officials are assessing whether it's safe to leave the scene, seven days after the fire broke out.

The fire's being treated as suspicious, although the precise cause may never be found. Auckland's deputy chief fire officer, Roger Callister, says evidence may have been destroyed.

Mr Callister says insurance and police investigators are waiting to gain access to the site.
