A fire officer has died after a rural fire truck from Hicks Bay rolled down a bank in Potaka, north of Gisborne.
The incident happened on Te Araroa Road at 4.13pm on Saturday as the fire service responded to a vehicle crash.
The police say no other vehicles were involved and the circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown.
There were three volunteer fire fighters on the appliance at the time. A second fire officer was flown to Gisborne Hospital with moderate injuries, a third was uninjured.
