St John Ambulance has paid tribute to a volunteer who died in a crash in northern East Cape.
Ray Barrett, 52, who was also a volunteer fire fighter, died when a fire truck rolled down a bank in Potaka, north of Gisborne, at 4pm on Saturday.
His son Tahi Barrett was also hurt in the.
Mr Barrett had served as a St John volunteer for more than nine years.
Gisborne team leader Shane Clapperton said he was respected by his colleagues and the community.
Three fire fighters were in the truck and a second officer was flown to Gisborne Hospital.
The third passenger was uninjured.
Gisborne Hospital says Mr Barrett's son, Tahi Barrett, is in a stable condition.
