A person is being treated by the Fire Service's decontamination unit at a Tauranga hospital.
An alarm was raised just after 11.30am on Monday and a team is at the hospital putting one person through the process.
Details of the substance involved are still sketchy. The Fire Service says it is not known whether anyone else is affected.
