Auckland University is investigating how a person pretended to be a medical student for two years.

The man aged in 20s was caught on Friday after handing in an assignment.

Lecturers noticed that he was not enrolled in the degree and began investigating.

Des Gorman, an associate dean at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, says he is almost certain the man would not have had contact with any patients or confidential material.

Dr Gorman says it would be highly surprising if the man was able to attend laboratory and clinical workshops, because lecturers would know who he was as the classes are so small.
