Warning after third major grass and scrub fire

6:44 pm on 17 October 2012

A scrub fire in the Gisborne region has prompted a warning from authorities for people not to light fires in strong winds.

It's the third major grass and scrub fire recently in the Gisborne-East Coast region.

Several fire appliances and about a dozen rural firefighters backed up by a helicopter with a monsoon bucket tackled the fire at Waihau Bay north of Gisborne on Wednesday.

It burnt out about two hectares of vegetation, and at one stage threatened property.

Firefighters say it started when the remains of a burnoff on the property last week reignited in the strong winds.

It follows a forest fire and another in vegetation at Makorori Beach near Gisborne at the weekend.
