A 36-year-old man has appeared before a registrar in the Rotorua District Court charged with causing the death of a hunter.
James Dodds was shot and killed while deerstalking in the Paeora Ranges, south of Rotorua, on 7 September.
His hunting companion, Henry Worsp, is charged with causing the death by carelessly using a .270 calibre Sako rifle.
Mr Worsp has been remanded on bail to appear again in the same court on 14 November.
