8:33 am on 1 January 2009

The body of a man who went missing while swimming in a north Canterbury river has been found downstream.

Police say the man, in his 40s, was at the Hurunui River with his family.

He went missing about 5pm on Wednesday, and his body was found an hour later.

Inspector John Doherty says family members lost sight of the man and called police.

A rescue helicopter was sent and four jet boats searched the river in the Greta Valley area.

His death takes the 2008 drowning toll to 96.

On Tuesday evening, Blair Martin, 21, was found floating near a swimming pontoon, several hours after he failed to return from a swim.

Senior Sergeant Alan Grindell says the Otago University student was regarded as a strong swimmer, so it is unclear how he got into trouble.
