Stepped-up patrols after second child abduction bid

Police in Rodney are stepping up their patrols of North Shore primary schools after a second attempt to abduct a child.

A nine-year-old girl was stopped on her way home from Red Beach School on Wednesday by a man who offered to give her a ride home in his car.

She refused and ran away and told her mother what had happened.

On Monday a man grabbed a five-year-old boy in Greenhithe as he walked home from school. The boy struggled free and ran to his mother; the man drove off.

Senior Sergeant Andy King says the two incidents are extremely concerning and police are looking into the possibility the same man was involved in both attempts.

He says police are working with the schools to raise awareness and have stepped up after-school patrols in the area.
