British comedian and television star Stephen Fry is in New Zealand filming part of a BBC documentary series about endangered species, including the kakapo.

Only 90 kakapo, the world's rarest parrot, are left in the wild.

Mr Fry is spending a week in New Zealand, filming kakapo at their sanctuary on Codfish Island.

The BBC series examines eight endangered species, 25 years after their plight was detailed by writers Douglas Adams and Mark Cawardine, in the book and radio series Last Chance to See.

One programme in the series of six will focus on New Zealand's unique wildlife.
