Tongariro crossing re-opens

6:58 pm on 19 October 2012

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing will be fully reopened to the public today after a volcanic eruption forced its closure in August.

An opening ceremony conducted by local hapu Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro was held at the Mangatepopo car park at which the rahui over the world-famous walking track will be lifted.

The Department of Conservation says a rahui will remain in place for a 1 km radius of the source of the eruption, Te Maari crater.

The track has been repaired but may be a little soft and rocky in places.
