Police say a pregnant 24-year-old woman was killed in a car crash north of Timaru on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened at about 3pm when two vehicles collided near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Divans Road.

The dead woman's husband, who was te driving their vehicle, was thrown from the car, sustaining serious injuries. Their two children aged four and five, who were in the back seat, have been treated for minor injuries.

There have now been two deaths on the road this Labour Weekend. A 17-year-old teenager was killed in a crash near Rotorua on Friday night.

The national manager of road policing, Carey Griffiths, says speed, alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt were factors in that accident.

Superintendent Griffiths says lives can be saved if everyone does their part, intervening before it is too late and stopping people from drinkp-driving.

He says police are also enforcing a tolerance of four kilometres an hour over the speed limit tolerance for all vehicles this weekend, as opposed to the usual 10.
