Council considers visitors fee for cultural attractions

2:01 pm on 3 January 2009

Wellington City Council is considering making out-of-town visitors pay to use its museums and galleries.

The council's Long-term Community Plan proposes charging a "modest fee" to non-residents to try and keep rates down.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast says ratepayers already make significant contributions to national and regional facilities and should not have to pay more if charges come into force.

Ms Prendergast says to keep the rates down, there will have to be some trade-offs.

She says the council decided its work for the coming year will be funded at the same level as last year.

Ms Prendergast says the council gives significant funding to Te Papa, The Royal New Zealand Ballet and professional theatres.

However, she says other councils in the region do not pay and still benefit from being close to the services.

A full list of the cost cutting options being considered will be on the council's website from 6 January.
