An American woman injured in a car crash in Waikato has not been told that her husband died in the accident.
Kirsten Steinke, 28, of Colorado has been recovering in Waikato Hospital from serious head injuries caused in the crash near the Waitomo Caves on 20 September this year and is in a stable condition.
The 28-year-old was honeymooning at the time with her 31-year-old husband, Kallan Stithem.
Her father, Jim Steinke, says his daughter is not yet aware of everything that has occurred, but is looking forward to returning to the United States this week where she will go into a rehab facility.
Mr Steinke says he has been overwhelmed by the generosity, support and kindness of people in Waikato and New Zealand.
