The holiday road toll has again been amended, after police confirmed the death of a man on New Year's Day. It is now 24 - six more than died last year.
The man, 87, was involved in a crash in the Waitaki district on Boxing Day.
The official Christmas road toll period ended at 6am on Monday. It lasted two days longer than last year's because of when Christmas Day fell.
A total of 364 people died on the roads in 2008.
