Witchhunt claim by cemetery vandal suspect

One of three men accused of vandalising Jewish graves in Auckland claims he is the victim of a witchhunt.

They are charged with wilful damage of the headstones at the cemetery in Symonds Street last week.

The three appeared at Auckland District Court on Tuesday and were bailed 13 November.

Before the hearing, Nathan Symington, 22, denied the accusation saying he was not racist and has an alibi.

He said there was CCTV footage showing only two people carrying out the vandalism, but it had been lost.

The other two accused successfully applied for interim name and image suppression, saying they had received death threats and feared for their safety.

Their bail conditions include a ban on going to places including graveyards, synagogues and Jewish schools.
