Teachers agree class size and homework not critical

Teachers have welcomed the findings of a study that suggests class sizes and homework do not determine educational success.

They agree with the report's findings that healthy interaction between students and teachers is the key to good learning.

However, they say the demands placed on teachers mean this is not always easy to put into practice.

The study, by Auckland University education professor John Hattie, calls for greater emphasis on the interaction between students and teachers.

Teachers say the study's findings are not new, but the workload required under the NCEA qualification system, coupled with poor staff to student ratios, hinder them in using the "Hattie indicators".
