More schools require digital hardware

More schools are making personal laptops and tablets compulsory.

Last year Auckland's Orewa High School made iPads compulsory for its students.

Now Epsom Girls' Grammar in Auckland and John Paul College in Rotorua will both introduce a Bring Your Own Device policy next year.

Both higher-decile schools will have netbooks to loan to those students who cannot afford their own laptop.

The principal of John Paul College and President of the Secondary Schools Principals Association, Patrick Walsh, says equity is a concern, particularly, for lower decile schools.

Mr Walsh says the Australian government provides laptops for free to those schools so he feels the Ministry of Education here needs to do the same.
