Whanganui shortlisted for intelligent community award

7:45 pm on 26 October 2012

Whanganui has been named a semi-finalist in an international award for the most intelligent community of the year.

It is one of 21 towns and cities throughout the world listed for leading the way in broadband and new technologies.

The announcement was made in Riverside, California, which is the current holder of the award.

Whanganui mayor Annette Main says making the semi-finals recognises the progress the city has made in gaining and using new technologies that benefit the whole community.

She says that includes programmes for those who do not have internet access, such as the Computer Clubhouse and Computers in Homes, and hosting an expo about broadband.

The winner of the award will be named in June.
