Priest's bloody protest not supported by church

3:04 pm on 8 January 2009

The Catholic Archbishop of Wellington says the church does not support the actions of a priest who smeared a mix of his blood and red paint on an Israeli memorial.

The incident occurred on Tuesday following a pro-Palestinian protest over the conflict in Gaza.

Archbishop John Dew says Father Gerard Burns was not representing the interests of the Catholic Church of New Zealand. He says it was done without any prior consultation with the church.

Archbishop Dew says the Catholic Church wants to see a swift end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas fighters.
