Beijing Olympic tennis champion Elena Dementieva defeated fellow Russian and doubles partner Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-1 in the ASB Classic final on Saturday.

Dementieva, 27, wrapped up the victory in 88 minutes, completing the tournament without dropping a set.

"I played some good tennis, especially in the semi-final and final. It's been a great beginning of the year," she told a news conference.

The win was the 12th title of her career and the fourth in the last year.

Top-seeded Dementieva had defeated last year's finalist Aravane Rezai, of France, 6-2 6-2 in just 66 minutes in Friday's semifinal.

The unseeded Vesnina made her first WTA Tour final with a tough 6-7 6-1 7-5 win over Britain's Anne Keovathong, in which she squandered four match points in the third set.

"Maybe I was bit tired," she said. "It was long week for me, a lot of long matches. Maybe I was a bit nervous today."

It is the second time the pair have played each other in singles after Dementieva beat Vesnina in three sets at S'Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands in 2006.

They also played together in the doubles in Auckland this year, losing in the quarterfinals.
