Corrections ordered to pay $1000 to rapist

The Corrections Department has been ordered to pay $1000 to a convicted multiple rapist.

Nicholas Reekie, who is serving a sentence of preventative detention, sued the department earlier this year for humiliation from when he was strip-searched at Paremoremo Prison in 2001 and 2002.

Justice Wylie earlier ruled Reekie's rights were breached, but refused to grant compensation because he said Reekie suffered no detrimental effects.

Reekie appealed against that decision.

Justice Wylie has now said it is appropriate the department make a contribution of $1000 towards Reekie's legal bills.

Reekie was convicted of raping and abducting four females aged between 11 and 69 and will be eligible for parole in 16 years.
