Surf patrols at Pakiri Beach not high priority

6:15 pm on 14 January 2009

Surf Life Saving New Zealand says a drowning at Pakiri Beach north of Auckland is not necessarily reason to start a life-saving service.

A 12-year-old girl died on Tuesday in Auckland Hospital after getting into trouble at the beach on Monday afternoon.

The girl's death is believed to be the first drowning at Pakiri Beach in 50 years.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand chief executive Geoff Barry says the tragedy has raised questions about whether there should be patrols at the beach.

But Mr Barry says the association will first consider alternatives to patrols such as signage and community education.

He says the incident was an isolated one and the beach does not feature prominently on the organisation's radar.

Rodney Mayor Penny Webster defended the rejection of calls for patrols, saying it was impractical.

Ms Webster says people need to keep a close eye on the water, particularly when children are involved.
