Pro-Israel rally held in Wellington

4:00 pm on 14 January 2009

Members of the Jewish community in Wellington have urged people in New Zealand to look at both sides of the conflict in Gaza.

Israel attacked Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip on 27 December after Hamas ended a ceasefire on 19 December. Fighting is continuing.

About 150 people carrying olive branches gathered on the steps of Parliament on Wednesday and held a minute's silence for those who have suffered because of the conflict.

Israeli-born organiser Tomer Sagi says the purpose of the rally was to demonstrate that Israel has been trying to achieve peace.
