Domestic violence data still being collected - police

9:43 am on 2 November 2012

Police are defending their approach to compiling information on domestic violence from criticism that not enough data is being collected.

Women's Refuge chief executive Heather Henare says police have stopped recording information that helps agencies have an accurate picture of family violence.

She made the comment while speaking in support of calls to make domestic violence a criminal offence in its own right.

Police national manager of prevention Superintendent Bruce Bird says police are still collecting data and sharing it with other agencies, but it is not being released as part of national statistics.
