Severe weather forecast for lower South Island

The South Island is bracing itself for wild weather, with gale-force winds and rain set to roll in on Friday night.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning, with as much as 150 millimetres of rain expected in Fiordland and Westland.

Inland Southland, Central Otago and the Lakes District, and the Canterbury High Country can expect severe gales gusting to 130km/h.

Police are warning motorists to beware - especially those with large vehicles and cars towing caravans.

The gales are expected to ease, but rain will continue.
