A house in Christchurch is due to be demolished because of water damage.
The Avonhead home of Kathleen Bennett and Graham Hollobon will be torn down next month because of severe water damage to the roof and walls.
Mrs Bennett says the house started leaking on the day they moved in 17 years ago and has not stopped since.
Home Owners & Buyers Association president John Gray believes there are thousands of leaky houses in Canterbury. He's urging people to ensure they get a house checked by a quality surveyor before committing to buy it.
South Islanders often think water damage is just an Auckland problem, Mr Gray says, and fail to see the signs in their own homes.
