Police are investigating a sexual assault on a Dutch tourist at a Southland camping ground early Thursday.
Police say two tourists, a woman, 22, and a man, 25,were asleep at the Tuatapere camping ground when a man broke into their vehicle around 6.40am and threatened them with a knife. He sexually assaulted the woman and demanded money before escaping.
The burglary of a Tuatapere property on the same morning may be connected to the attack.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in Tuatapere overnight to come forward.
