Fine for illegal rubbish dump

A Hawera man who used his land as an illegal rubbish dump has been ordered to pay $45,000.

Despite repeated court orders and council abatement notices, Alan Mouland has refused to clean up the property where he and contractors have dumped rubbish since 2007.

Taranaki Regional Council recorded 73 dumping incidents at the property during 2007 - 2008.

Batteries, oil, paint, asbestos, wood, electrical goods and domestic refuse were dumped and high levels of toxins have been recorded in water and stream sediments.

In New Plymouth District Court on Tuesday, Judge Brian Dwyer said Mouland has until next Friday to pay the $45,000 - the balance of a $50,000 fine.
