Collins to discuss Shipton's alleged parole breach

The Minister of Corrections is to meet with her department head to discuss the handling of allegations that convicted rapist Brad Shipton breached his parole.

The department had asked for Shipton to be recalled to prison after it was alleged he breached his parole conditions by having coffee with co-offender Peter McNamara.

But it later withdrew the request, saying it appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.

Shipton, a former police officer and Tauranga city councillor, was released on parole in November after serving three years for his part in the 1989 pack rape of a woman in Mount Maunganui.

The Minister, Judith Collins, says she would expect Corrections to err on the side of caution when recalling parolees to prison for alleged breaches.

She will meet the department's chief executive, Barry Matthews, next week to discuss the issue.

Shipton has now presented three forms of evidence to the department showing he could not have met with McNamara for coffee at the alleged time.

The department said McNamara was having coffee with a man who bore a strong resemblance to Shipton.
