Minister drops merger plan for some schools

Education Minister Hekia Parata has withdrawn a proposal to merge four well-established Christchurch schools into two.

In September this year, the Ministry of Education along with the minister said it was considering merging Avonside Girls' High at Christchurch Girls' High and to merge Shirley Boys' High at Christchurch Boys' High.

On Wednesday, Ms Parata announced that she had ruled that option out.

A spokesperson for the minister said it had merely been one of several options being looked at, subject to geotechnical reports.

The spokesperson said it is still unclear what will happen to the schools, with the ministry waiting for the results of those reports.
