Sealord has been fined $63,400 after an accident left a fishing crew member with serious injuries.

The company was also ordered to pay reparations of $12,500 to James Billingham, who fell five metres through a hatch on the Ocean Dawn, rupturing his spleen.

Sealord had pleaded guilty to a charge related to the incident under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

In Nelson District Court on Thursday, Judge Tony Zohrab said the company had failed to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of workers aboard the vessel.
