Police in Christchurch are investigating the attempted abduction of a boy who used a stick to fight off his attacker.
Detective Sergeant Craig Farrrant said the boywas grabbed from behind late on Wednesday afternoon while walking in Elmwood Drive and a man tried to drag him towards a waiting car.
He says the boy grabbed a stick and fought back, managing to break free and run to his home nearby.
The boy was not injured and the offender is reported to have run away.
Police are appealing for sightings of a red car in the Prebbleton area afterwards.
They say it appears to be a one-off incident.
