Call for fresh look at Basin Reserve proposals

8:39 pm on 8 November 2012

The Wellington Regional Council wants transport proposals for the Basin Reserve to be reconsidered in light of a vehicle tunnel planned under a new war memorial park nearby.

The Transport Agency has already approved the construction of a $90 million flyover at the landmark sportsground.

Regional councillor Paul Bruce says the Memorial Park tunnel would dramatically reduce the cost of 'Option X', a popular ground level alternative to the flyover.

Option X would incorporate a slightly longer tunnel and was designed by Wellington's Architectural Centre.

The centre's president, Christine McCarthy, says this option would be about $10 million cheaper than the $140 million price of the flyover and Memorial Park tunnel combined.

The Transport Agency says it reassessed all the options after the Memorial Park tunnel was approved and found that the flyover remains the most affordable solution.
