Police believe a man found dead near an Auckland rail bridge is connected to a stabbing a short time earlier.

A woman was stabbed at her home in Manurewa about 11.30am on Friday and died while undergoing surgery at Middlemore Hospital later in the day.

The man's body was found on a rail bridge a short time later. His death is not thought to be suspicious.

Police are appealing for sightings of him before the incident. The man is described as Indian, aged in his 30s, and was walking along Great South Road carrying a bag about midday.

Train services between Homai and Pukekohe have resumed after being stopped for two hours while police conducted scene examinations.
