Prince Charles celebrates his birthday in the capital

9:22 pm on 14 November 2012

Prince Charles sang along with about 200 people who helped celebrate his 64th birthday at Government House in Wellington on Wednesday.

The Prince and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are in New Zealand for six days as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

They were welcomed at Government House in Wellington with a warrior challenge; a karanga or call of welcome; and a haka or ceremonial dance.

They also met members of the public, and mayor Celia Wade-Brown, on a waterfront walk in the capital.

Prince Charles officially opened a new visitor centre at Government House - New Zealand's Diamond Jubilee gift to the Queen.

"I couldn't think of a better, happier place to spend my birthday than here with all of you in New Zealand, and we've been so touched by the welcome we've been given here, and of course in Auckland, and by all the kind New Zealanders who have shown us such warmth and friendliness."

The Governor General, Lieutenant-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, acknowledged the special regard New Zealanders have for the Queen.

Prince Charles celebrated his birthday afterwards with a party hosted by Sir Jerry, who himself turned 58 on Wednesday.

The ballroom at Government House was decorated with gold helium balloons and the Air Force Band performed.

The birthday cake was baked and decorated by Government House head chef, Simon Peacock.

Each of the 64 pieces had an item of kiwiana, for the 64 New Zealanders invited because they share a birthday with the Prince.

Prime Minister John Key, his wife and Labour Party leader David Shearer were also at the party.

In the evening, Sir Jerry and his wife Lady Janine hosted a reception for the royal couple.
