Crashes follow Cup Day in Christchurch

Two drink driving crashes in Christchurch following the annual Cup Day at Addington Raceway on Tuesday have left several people in hospital.

Police say a van with 10 people in it, none of whom were wearing seatbelts, rolled after the drunk driver sped around a corner.

Senior Sergeant Rob Patterson says the van didn't have proper seats and was seriously overloaded, and three people ended up in hospital.

He says the 21-year-old man driving the van fled the scene, but was found by police and charged with excess breath alcohol and failing to stop.

He says another drunk driver hit a pedestrian on Tuesday night, leaving the victim in a critical condition at Christchurch Hospital.

Senior Sergeant Patterson says it's disturbing that incidents like these are occurring, despite the constant messages about not drink-driving.
